Pickups behind a gate

Gate code ready? Reserve an airport transfer from a gated community

A gate adds one more step between the street and your front door. When you reserve an airport transfer from a gated community with the desk, the request form asks how that gate opens, so the local car company can plan for it. Its driver arrives knowing whether to give a name to a guard, press a call box, or type a code, and your pickup time stays yours.

Entry to a gated neighborhood at dawn: a small limestone gatehouse with a lit window, a red and white gate arm across the lane, closed iron gates, clipped hedges and young bare trees on flat open land.

What the form asks at a gate

How the gate lets a car in
A guard wants a name on a list, a call box rings a number, a keypad takes a code; each one asks something different of the driver.
Gate code, or the name the guard or call box lists
Without it the car waits outside the gate while the pickup time runs.

Heading out to DFW or Love Field

The car stops at your front door, not at the entrance to the subdivision. Once the gate lets the driver through, they follow the street to your address and park where you said to wait. If your gate uses a call box, your phone rings a few minutes before the pickup time, so keep it close and answer even if the number looks new.

Be outside or at the window when the car pulls up. Have bags by the door, IDs in a pocket, and the terminal you are leaving from in mind for DFW, since the driver drops you at that terminal's departures curb. At Love Field the drop is the curb by the ticketing hall.

Large neighborhoods sometimes have two entrances, one with a guard and one for residents only. Name the one a visitor car can use. If your street sits deep inside and the house numbers are hard to read at night, say so in the notes field and mention a landmark, such as a corner mailbox cluster or a pond.

Late arrivals at a closed gate

Plenty of neighborhood gates stand open in daylight and close after dark, so a ride home at midnight can meet a barrier that was wide open when you left. Tell the desk how the gate works at the hour you expect to land, not only how it works at noon. A guard booth that closes at ten may leave a keypad as the only way in.

The company's driver meets you at the airport, loads your bags, and heads for your street. If the gate needs a guest name, make sure the list carries the company's name or the driver's for that night. If it needs a code, write it into the request for the ride home too, because each code is erased after a single ride.

A night flight can still land ahead of schedule or behind it. With the flight number in your request, the free wait begins when your flight touches down: 30 minutes after a domestic landing and 45 after an international landing at DFW. That gives you time to reach the pickup spot, and it gives the driver room to plan the gate at the end of the ride.

Details that get the car through

Each fact below answers a question the driver would otherwise have to solve at the gate while your pickup time slips away. A guard wants a name, a call box wants a phone that picks up, and a keypad wants digits. Tell the desk which one you have and the driver prepares for it before leaving the lot. Your request can stay brief, but these items matter most at a gated entrance:

  • Which kind of gate you have: a staffed booth, a call box, or a keypad
  • The code, or the name a guard or call box will look for
  • Whether the gate changes from open to closed at night
  • A second entrance the driver should use, if the main one is for residents only
  • The house number as it reads from the street

When a gate stalls a pickup

Most delays at gated neighborhoods come from a driver with nothing to offer the gate. A guard has no name on the list, a call box rings a landline no one answers, or the code changed last month. Each minute spent outside the barrier comes off your margin at the airport.

Putting the gate details in the request fixes that before the day of the ride. Your code reaches the desk through the form, goes on to the company for the driver assigned to that ride, and no further, and the written confirmation from the car company names the car and gives its phone line for the day, so you can reach the company if the gate still gives trouble. Send your gate details

Fill in the request form on this page with your address and how your gate opens, or call during phone hours. The desk replies with a fixed fare from a local car company.
